FAQ

Still have questions?

What is the LAB equivalent of an RGB color?

RGB is first converted to linear RGB, then to CIE XYZ using the sRGB matrix and the D65 reference white, and finally to CIE L*a*b*. L* is lightness from 0 (black) to 100 (white), a* runs from green (negative) to red (positive), and b* runs from blue (negative) to yellow (positive). For example, RGB(124, 58, 237) is roughly lab(43, 65, -79). This tool does the math automatically.

How do I input RGB values into this converter?

Enter your RGB values in any common format: rgb(255,128,64), 255, 128, 64, or 255 128 64. The tool is forgiving with spacing and punctuation. You can also use the color picker.

Does this tool store or upload my colors?

No. Every conversion happens locally in your browser. Nothing you type or pick is sent to a server.

Can I convert LAB back to RGB?

Yes - use the LAB to RGB converter for the reverse direction, or any of the other format converters linked below.

Why does LAB matter compared to RGB or HSL?

LAB is designed to match human perception, so equal numeric distances in LAB roughly correspond to equal perceived color differences. That makes it useful for measuring color accuracy, checking print consistency, and comparing colors across devices - something RGB and HSL were never designed for.

Is there a limit on how many colors I can convert?

No. Convert as many colors as you like, for free, with no account required.
