FAQ

Still have questions?

What's the best method to convert HEX to grayscale?

Luminosity (Rec. 601) is the best default - it weighs green highest and blue lowest to match how the human eye perceives brightness, which is why it's used in most photo and design software.

What's the difference between Luminosity, Average and Lightness?

Luminosity weighs red, green and blue by how sensitive the eye is to each. Average simply takes the mean of the three channels, which is faster but looks less natural. Lightness averages only the highest and lowest channel, matching the L in HSL.

How is a HEX color turned into a single gray value?

The HEX code is split into red, green and blue channels, combined into one brightness number with the chosen formula, then that same number is used for all three channels again, which is why the result always looks neutral gray.

Does this tool store or upload my colors?

No. Every conversion happens locally in your browser. Nothing you type or pick is sent to a server.
